About The Practitioner

Pat graduated from Naturecare College in Sydney in 1986 and has had 23 years clincal experience as a medical herbalist, homoeopath and naturopath. After working for 7 years in Leichhardt and Liverpool Womens Community Health Centres she returned to NZ in 1993.

Once in NZ she went into general practice which involved a lot of her work being focused on "bodywork" - treating musculo-skeletal problems. Although various bodywork techniques including massage were part of her training at Naturecare College, Pat felt she needed some extra "tools" to deal with the ever increasing demand for hands on treatments in her Waipu practice. In 1996 she began training in Fascial Kinetics with Russell Sturgess who came over from Australia to provide training for his NZ students. She completed all levels of F.K. over the course of the next 2 years.

What is Bowen Therapy/ Fascial Kinetics ?

Bowen Therapy is a soft tissue therapy, working the fascia, which administers changes to the both mechanics and function of the body, allowing for the body to gently re-adjust itself. It can be easily done through the client's clothes.

Bowen Therapy was developed by Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia in the early 1960’s. It was popularized by students of Tom in the eighties, and training in this technique became readily available for the first time in 1986. Since then it has been taught extensively throughout the world.

Facial Kinetics is Bowen with a little extra. F.K. was researched and developed by Russell Sturgess who was already using Bowen Therapy, but wanted to explore it's potential further. He also brought a deeper understanding to his students of how Bowen influenced soft tissue, particuarly the fascia. Russell's technique remains very true to the original Bowen that he learnt, and in addition he has spent many years researching how and why the technique works so well.

Bowen/Fascial Kinetics addresses fascial (connective tissue) restrictions in a gentle and unobtrusive manner by applying adjustments, called "moves", across the muscle fibre in a specific sequence. This creates an opportunity for the fascia to move fluid in (re-hydrate) or out, as required. This assists in bringing harmony to the mechanical and physiological functions of the body. Once inflammation, swelling and pain significantly reduce, then mobility and flexiblity increase. For many this is achieved by the end of a treatment, for others it may occur over the next 24 or 48 hours following treatment.

Conditions that can be treated include: sciatica and other lower back problems, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, migraine and headaches, back and neck problems, sprains and strains, TMJ dysfunction, tennis elbow, RSI, carpal tunnel. It is especially beneficial for people with Lupus and MS. It is safe and effective during pregnancy and just prior to labour and following the birth. Children and babies usually enjoy it as it is very gentle.
